I am 11 years old and I think I am going through puberty. Why do my nipples hurt when I touch them? Is it normal?

OK. Are you a boy? Because I had that when I was your age. You might notice a hard lump in there. It's totally normal. The medical phrase I was given is “breast buds”. No, it doesn't mean you're growing breasts, it's a totally routine part of male puberty, and will pass in a couple of months at the most. It's basically your chest starting to form Pecs, or Pectoral Muscles. I'm 35, they're still there, and they'll be there for life, but they're the basic swelling of the pecs that even men have. Not harmful. Definitely not boobs forming. It's nothing to worry about, nothing to be embarrassed about. I wouldn't tell anyone in your school though. I made that mistake and the bullying I was already suffering got worse for a while. If you're not being bullied, I still wouldn't tell anyone at school, purely because kids your age can be extremely cruel to people who they see as “different” and saying you've got “breast buds” will open you up to people calling you a girl. Or even a fag. I'm not saying being a homosexual is a bad thing, but kids your age, who are likely going through puberty themselves, which is a confusing period of time for anybody, often take their confusion about what's happening to their own bodies, out on people who seem more confident than them. Good luck little dude. Enjoy your life.
